April Hutchens is a fellow fifth year student in IARC, and she is working on her thesis as well. April's project is located in Harmony, North Carolina. She is taking an existing building and turning it into a cafe with a residence located above. Her design intent is to take this space and bring it into the 21st century. She plans to do this through her material choices. The bottom level she wants to use warm tones and introduce tile, and in the residences she wants to use materials that make the space feel warmer and more like home. She plans to use a metal roof, and take advantage of natural lighting. She designed a new entrance vestibule to transition the users into the space. Some advice that I have for her is to take into consideration the culture and importance that this cafe has to the town of Harmony.
